[ARCHIVED] Customer Water Bills Update

We take our customer’s concerns very seriously. If we find an error in our meter reading system or our billing system, we will absolutely correct that problem immediately. During extended dry periods like we have seen since the middle of July, it is not uncommon for the District to see residential accounts that use up to 40,000 gallons per month. We clearly understand that water usage for the majority of our customers increased significantly in the last several weeks resulting in higher water bills. Typical water production for the District in the month of September is 334 million gallons. Due to the dry weather experienced this year, water production for September totaled 428 million gallons. This represents a 28% increase in water usage for the month.

In a year like this year where we had a wet spring and early summer changing to a dry late summer, water usage for a month can easily double or more depending on how sprinkler systems are operated. Please remember to check your sprinkler timer, clock settings, and rain sensor operation frequently. Power outages can affect default settings which can cause increased water use that is not immediately realized.

The meter reading process is very accurate with automation minimizing the chance for human error. All readings undergo a second check at which time abnormal readings receive field verification. We have to treat all of our customers equally. We do this by ensuring that each of our customers pays for only the water that actually passes through their meter.

We will continue to look into all billing reviews requested by customers. This procedure consists of verifying that the meter reading is accurate, determining if an apparent leak exists within the customer’s system, and notifying the customer if a leak is found. This is done to ensure the amount of water stated on your bill did go through your meter and that the bill has been calculated correctly.
