District Projects

Planning Ahead

Significant development is occurring in the northern portion of our service area. The District requires that all new developments seeking water and wastewater service must acquire and dedicate sufficient water resources to serve their development. Several developers have met this requirement, and the District is in the process of developing some really exciting water supply projects. The following is a list of District projects currently underway:

  • To serve approximately 5000 additional households, the District is drilling additional alluvial wells that will be a part of
ongoing excavation of a water storage facility
our current combined (drinking and irrigation) water supply system. To be able to pump the wells, the District will be required to use senior surface water rights to replace the depletions caused by the pumping of the alluvial wells. Several developers have dedicated sufficient senior surface water rights to the District which will allow this expansion to occur. This project will include additional wells, the senior surface water rights, and raw water storage which will hold the water so we can time the deliveries of the surface water rights back to the river when they are needed.

  • Several developers are participating in the purchase of a large surface water supply. This water project will provide potable drinking water for approximately 21,000 households and will include water rights, raw water storage, and a new surface water treatment facility.
  • The District is in the initial phases of developing a separate irrigation system in the northern portion of its service area. It is anticipated that this system will provide irrigation supplies to about 31,000 new households. The irrigation system will include a completely separate set of alluvial wells (located in the northwest and northeast portions of the service area), and completely independent infrastructure from the potable water supply system. The infrastructure for the irrigation system will include pipelines, pump stations and reservoirs that will be used to deliver the irrigation supplies. Developers are completely installing two (drinking and irrigation) water supply systems within their developments, and have also provided the surface water rights necessary to replace the depletions associated with the future pumping of the irrigation wells. • Lift Station 2 – Flow Equalization Basin

South Adams County Water and Sanitation District’s Lift Station at 120th and Brighton Rd. now has a new neighbor. Construction of a Flow Equalization Basin next to the existing lift station was completed in June 2006. The new structure will more than double the capacity of the existing lift station, allowing it to keep pace with the high flows from its large northern service area.
The approximately 700,000 gallon basin will allow water to be stored during peak flow periods, such as around 6 p.m. when people return home from work and cook dinner. This wastewater is then pumped during periods when the flows are lower. By equalizing the flows, the station can get the most out of the existing pumps and mains.

the separate irrigation system is one of the largest of its kind in the State of Colorado

These projects will come on line in phases, over the next 20 years. A portion of the expansion of the existing alluvial wellfield is already complete; the remainder to be completed within three years. The potable surface water supply project is projected to be completed in 10 to 15 years depending on the rate of development. The separate irrigation system will gradually be brought on line starting next year with completion occurring over the next 20 years.

We continue to have new developments that are seeking water and wastewater services. The District will not serve new development until adequate water supplies are identified and acquired. The District, along with developers, continuously searches for new water supply projects that will integrate into our system. To date, we have had great success working with landowners to develop water supply projects. We look forward to continuing to work together on future water projects.
