A Brief History

Who we are and how we got started. The South Adams County Water and Sanitation District (SACWSD) was formed in 1953 – prior to Commerce City becoming a city. It’s presently the largest water district in the state of Colorado which covers 65 square miles, and serves approximately 44,000 customers (13,800 accounts). SACWSD is also in the “forefront” of other cities and Districts in successfully supplying the best water and wastewater service in Colorado. It may also be the first Public Utility in the nation to receive funds directly from the Army to build treatment and water supply plants for damages done by the government (typically, the Army has the projects built and then turns them over to the entity). Moreover, as a result of the actions taken by SACWSD and other community leaders to acquire additional water supply, the image of Commerce City has improved, which ultimately has promoted growth in the industrial as well as the residential areas.

Where we’re located. The District Main office is located at East 70th Avenue (East of Monaco Street); the Klein Water Treatment Plant is just north of 72nd Avenue and Quebec Street, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant is north of 96th Avenue and Monaco (this area has been served since 1953). When are the Board Meetings. Regular meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm, at the District Main Office located at 6595 E. 70th Avenue, Commerce City, CO 80022.
