The Hardness Advisory Committee (HAC) was formed in early 2017. The committee was comprised of 13 members including residents of the District, business interests, a Tri-County health representative, a former SACWSD Board member, and the current District manager. The goal of the HAC was to form a recommendation to the Board of Directors on a course of action for addressing water hardness in the District’s potable supply. The committee met on the first Tuesday of every month starting in March 2017 until December 2017. These meetings consisted of activities deemed necessary by the committee to formulate a recommendation. This included identification of needed data, review of available information and identification of potential solutions to the elevated water hardness. After reviewing numerous options the HAC suggested the District should perform a pilot study on a water softening treatment known as pellet softening. The pilot study was approved in June 2017 by the Board of Directors. The results from the pilot study showed that the pellet softening treatment was able to satisfy the goals of the HAC. In November 2017 the HAC held two public meetings to receive public input about the recommendation to propose the pellet softening centralized treatment to the board. After receiving public input the committee decided to move forward with the recommendation of the centralized pellet softening treatment to address the water hardness of the District at the December 13, 2017 board meeting. The board unanimously voted to approve the pellet softening system. The project is expected to take 3 years to complete with the pellet softening system becoming operational in 2020.
